Figure XXX: The base bathymetry used to specify model depths.  Digital bathymetric data were obtained from Herman Varma (Bedford Institute of Oceanography, personal communication) which were compiled from digital charts, digitized field sheets and recent surveys.  In areas where data was lacking (Western coastal sections and northern areas the bathymetry was augmented with gridded data from IBCAO [reference] and etopo2{1?} [reference].  {was there an us .gov database used as well?}.  To make the database manageable, the bathymetry data were reduced to twice the resolution of the best model resolution before the model depths were interpolated.
